Edward Lee writes: This album is a digital recreation of work originally created in the 1970s with guitars and some effects, on a reel-to-reel tape recorder using sound-on- sound recording.
Though the pieces show influences of the various genres which had influenced me, they were not intended to be “rock” “fusion” or whatever. I have therefore subtitled this album “music for electric guitar”.
Out of necessity I I had to create music without drums. But I wished to explore other ways in which rhythm might be articulated. So at various points I created superimposed metres, irregularity, and changes of tempo.
I also wished to see what would happen if I set aside the basic forms of jazz and rock, as well as taking modes further, using less common ones (eg Lydian) as well as mixing modes.
Some of the pieces are “pure music” in the way in which instrumental classical music or jazz are. But I also found myself drawn to music which was programmatic, or created landscapes.
